Being a place where a majority of minorities live, Leimert Park has always been a place that breeds a mixture of cultures. This can be explained by the Census Report. The report shows Hispanics are the most prominent in the area having a percentage of 59% and Black people are the second most prominent with a percentage of 28%. Whites and Asians are also in the area but at lower percentages of 6 and 5%.

Looking at the breakdown of race and ethnicity for Leimert Park it is understandable that the highest-ranked place of birth for the foreign-born population is Latin America with a percentage of 84%.

The languages spoken at home data reflects that 60% of children ages 5–17-year-olds speak Spanish in their homes. For this same age group, the data reflects that only 36% of children in this area only speak English in their homes. When comparing this data to the number of adults who speak Spanish in their home, the number is not too far off, having a percentage rate of 53% and a percentage rate of 39% of adults who speak only English in their homes. To me, this data was surprising because I thought the number of adults who speak Spanish in their homes would be higher than the number of kids who speak Spanish in their homes.

As for the median income for my community, Leimert Park has a median income of $45,984. When compared to per capita income, the numbers make sense. According to the Census, the per capita income is $22,530.

Majority of the people in my community are making below 50k a year. This low income makes it difficult to do things like take off of work when a pandemic strikes. The infection rate for Leimert Park is 12142.30 per 100,000. This doesn’t shock me because in this area are some of the essential workers who don’t have the luxury of not going to work or working from home.

What it is reported in the news about this data can impact census outcomes by bringing in others from different neighborhoods, later skewing the percentages of things like language, income, and ethnicity. The news reported could also point out a need for different facilities to come and improve the area.
